Why Apply via WhatsApp

The SASSA WhatsApp channel was introduced to make the SRD R370 application accessible to people who do not have reliable access to a desktop computer or who find the web portal difficult to navigate on a mobile browser. WhatsApp is widely available on even basic smartphones and uses minimal data, making it a practical option for applicants in areas with limited connectivity.

The WhatsApp application process covers the same eligibility checks and captures the same information as the web portal. Submitting via WhatsApp does not disadvantage your application in any way compared to applying through srd.sassa.gov.za.

Before You Start: What You Need

An active WhatsApp account. WhatsApp must be installed and active on your phone. The number you use for WhatsApp does not have to be the same as the number you register for your SRD application, but having them as the same number simplifies the verification process.

Your South African ID number. Your 13-digit South African ID number is required to start the application. Have it ready before you begin.

An active South African phone number. The phone number you register for your SRD application will be used for all future OTP verifications when checking your status, updating banking details, and submitting appeals. Use a number you have reliable ongoing access to. Do not use a number that belongs to someone else or a number you may lose access to.

Your banking details. You will need your bank account number, the name of your bank, and your account type to capture your payment method during the application. If you do not yet have a bank account, you can open one at TymeBank for free at Pick n Pay or Boxer before starting your application. Having banking details ready avoids delays in payment processing once your application is approved.

The Official SASSA WhatsApp Number

The only official SASSA WhatsApp number for SRD applications is 082 046 8553.

Save this number in your phone contacts before starting. Do not use any other WhatsApp number claiming to be SASSA. Fake SASSA WhatsApp numbers are one of the most common SRD scams in circulation. If a number is not 082 046 8553 it is not SASSA.

To start a conversation, open WhatsApp, find the saved contact, and send any message such as “Hi” to begin. The SASSA WhatsApp bot will respond with a menu of options.

Step by Step: How To Apply for SRD via WhatsApp

Step 1: Send a message to 082 046 8553.

Open WhatsApp and send any message to the official SASSA number to initiate the conversation. The bot will respond with a welcome message and a numbered menu. Select the option for SRD application or new application.

Step 2: Select your language.

SASSA’s WhatsApp service supports multiple South African languages. Select your preferred language from the options provided.

Step 3: Enter your ID number.

The bot will ask for your 13-digit South African ID number. Type it carefully and double check every digit before sending. An incorrect ID number will link your application to the wrong profile and cause identity verification problems.

Step 4: Enter your phone number.

The bot will ask for the phone number you want to register for your SRD application. This is the number all future OTPs will be sent to. Enter the number carefully. If this number ever becomes inactive you will need to visit a SASSA office to update it.

Step 5: Verify with OTP.

An OTP will be sent to the phone number you entered in Step 4. Enter this OTP in the WhatsApp chat to verify the number. If you do not receive the OTP within a few minutes check that the number you entered is correct and try again.

Step 6: Confirm your personal details.

The bot will display your personal details retrieved from the Department of Home Affairs using your ID number. Confirm that your name, surname, and date of birth are correct. If any details are incorrect, do not proceed. Visit a SASSA office or contact the Department of Home Affairs on 0800 60 11 90 to resolve the mismatch before restarting the application.

Step 7: Confirm your residential address.

The bot will ask for your residential address. Provide your current residential address in South Africa. This is used to confirm that you are resident in the country and to determine which SASSA office covers your area.

Step 8: Enter your banking details.

The bot will ask for your payment method and banking details. Select your bank from the list provided, enter your account number, and confirm your account type. Double check every digit of your account number before confirming. An incorrect account number means payment cannot be processed even if your application is approved.

If you do not have a bank account, select an alternative payment method such as retail collection if available in the menu. Note that a bank account is the most reliable payment method and avoids collection-related delays.

Step 9: Confirm and submit.

The bot will display a summary of your application details for your review. Check every detail carefully including your ID number, phone number, address, and banking details. Confirm submission once you are satisfied everything is correct.

Step 10: Note your reference number.

After submission the bot will provide an application reference number. Note this number immediately. You will need it to track your application status.

How To Check Your SRD Application Status via WhatsApp

Once your application has been submitted you can check your status through the same WhatsApp channel.

Send a message to 082 046 8553 and select the status check option from the menu. Enter your ID number and the OTP sent to your registered phone number. Your current monthly status will be displayed.

For a more detailed view of your monthly results including your personal payment date for approved months, use the SRD status portal directly. The portal shows more detail than the WhatsApp status check.

How To Update Banking Details via WhatsApp

If your banking details have changed you can update them through the WhatsApp channel.

Send a message to 082 046 8553 and select the update banking details option from the menu. Follow the prompts to enter your new account details. Verify with the OTP sent to your registered phone number.

For full guidance on updating banking details including common problems and how to fix them see our SRD Banking Details Update page.

Common Problems With the WhatsApp Application Process

OTP not received.

If you do not receive the OTP check that you have mobile signal and that your phone number is active and RICA registered. Try requesting the OTP again after a few minutes. If the OTP still does not arrive, your phone number may not be correctly RICA registered under your name and ID. Contact your network operator to check your RICA registration.

ID number not recognised.

If the bot does not recognise your ID number, check that you have entered all 13 digits correctly. If the number is correct and still not recognised, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to check whether there is an issue with your profile.

Personal details shown are incorrect.

If the details retrieved from the Department of Home Affairs do not match your ID document, do not proceed with the application. The mismatch must be resolved at the Department of Home Affairs before you can apply. Visit your nearest Department of Home Affairs office or call 0800 60 11 90. For full guidance see our SASSA Identity Verification page.

Bot stops responding.

If the WhatsApp bot stops responding mid-application, wait a few minutes and send a new message to restart the conversation. You may need to start the application process from the beginning. Your previously entered information is not always saved if the session times out.

Banking details not accepted.

If your banking details are not accepted check that you are entering the correct account number and that the account is in your own name. SASSA does not accept joint accounts, business accounts, or accounts in another person’s name. For full guidance see our SRD Banking Details Update page.

Already applied message.

If the bot tells you an application already exists under your ID number, your application may have been submitted previously or someone may have applied using your ID number without your knowledge. Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to investigate.

WhatsApp application versus web portal.

If the WhatsApp process is not working for you, the same application can be completed through the web portal at srd.sassa.gov.za. Both methods produce the same result and there is no advantage to either channel over the other in terms of processing priority.

What Happens After You Apply

After submitting your application SASSA will assess your eligibility for each month within the application period. The assessment checks your identity, income sources, existing grants, and other eligibility factors through automated database cross-checks.

Your monthly results will show as Pending while the assessment is in progress. Results change to Approved or Declined once the assessment is complete for each month. Check your status regularly on the SRD status portal or through the WhatsApp channel.

For a full explanation of what each status means see our SRD Status Approved and SRD Status Pending pages.

If any month is declined, check the specific decline reason shown on the portal and see our SRD Declined hub for guidance on appealing that specific reason.

Scam Awareness: Fake SASSA WhatsApp Numbers

Fake SASSA WhatsApp numbers are one of the most widespread SRD scams in South Africa. Scammers create WhatsApp profiles using SASSA logos and branding and publish fake numbers in WhatsApp groups, social media posts, and forwarded messages.

The only legitimate SASSA WhatsApp number is 082 046 8553. Any other number claiming to be SASSA WhatsApp is a scam regardless of how official it looks.

Common fake WhatsApp scams include numbers that collect your ID and banking details to steal your identity or redirect your grant payment, bots that ask for a fee to process your application or guarantee approval, and numbers that ask for your OTP to verify your identity on your behalf.

Never share your OTP with anyone through WhatsApp. Never pay a fee to apply for SRD. If you have shared personal information with a number you now believe is fake, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 immediately and report the scam to the South African Police Service.

SRD WhatsApp Application FAQs

Is the WhatsApp application the same as applying online?
Yes. The WhatsApp application captures the same information and goes through the same eligibility assessment as the web portal application. There is no difference in processing priority or outcomes between the two methods.

Can I use someone else’s WhatsApp to apply?
You can use another person’s phone to send messages to the SASSA WhatsApp number, but the phone number you register for your SRD application should be your own number that you have ongoing access to. Registering someone else’s number means all future OTPs and status notifications go to that person’s phone and you will be locked out of your own account.

What if I do not have WhatsApp?
Apply through the web portal at srd.sassa.gov.za instead. The process and outcome are identical. WhatsApp is simply an alternative channel for applicants who find it more accessible.

Can I apply for SRD via WhatsApp if I already applied before?
If you are reapplying for a new application period, use the same WhatsApp channel and select the reapplication option. Your previous application information may be prefilled but review and confirm all details especially your banking details and phone number before submitting.

How long does it take to get a response after applying via WhatsApp?
The WhatsApp application is submitted immediately. The assessment then takes between two and four weeks for initial results to appear. Check your status regularly through the WhatsApp channel or the SRD status portal.

What if I made a mistake in my application?
Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 immediately to correct errors in your submitted application. Errors in your ID number, phone number, or banking details can cause identity verification failures and payment problems.

Can I update my banking details through WhatsApp after applying?
Yes. Send a message to 082 046 8553 and select the banking details update option. Follow the prompts and verify with the OTP sent to your registered number.

The WhatsApp bot told me I already have an application. What does this mean?
This means an application already exists in the SASSA system under your ID number. This could be a previous application you submitted, a reapplication from a previous period, or in rare cases fraudulent use of your ID number. Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to investigate and confirm what application exists under your ID.

Is there a fee to apply via WhatsApp?
No. The SRD application via WhatsApp is completely free. Standard WhatsApp data costs apply depending on your mobile data plan but SASSA charges no fee whatsoever. Anyone asking for payment to process your WhatsApp application is a scammer.

What is the difference between the SASSA WhatsApp number and the SASSA call centre?
The WhatsApp number 082 046 8553 is an automated bot channel for applications, status checks, and basic updates. The call centre on 0800 60 10 11 connects you to a human agent for complex queries, disputes, and issues the bot cannot resolve. Use WhatsApp for straightforward tasks and the call centre for anything requiring human assistance.
