UIF vs SASSA: What You’re Actually Allowed to Claim Together in 2026

No — you cannot receive UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) benefits and the SASSA SRD R370 grant at the same time. South African law prohibits receiving both simultaneously. If SASSA’s system detects that you are registered as a UIF beneficiary, your SRD grant application will be declined.

This page explains exactly why this happens, what “UIF registered” means on your SASSA status, and how to resolve it if you believe the decline is an error.

Why You Cannot Claim UIF and SASSA at the Same Time

The SRD R370 grant is designed specifically for people who have no income and no access to any other form of financial support. UIF is a form of financial support — so receiving UIF payments means you do not meet the SRD grant’s eligibility criteria.

This applies to all forms of UIF benefits, including:

  • Unemployment benefits
  • Illness benefits
  • Maternity benefits
  • Dependant’s benefits

If you are currently receiving any UIF payment, your SASSA SRD R370 application will be declined automatically. This is not an error — it is how the system is designed.

What “UIF Registered” Means on Your SASSA Status

When your SASSA status shows “UIF Registered” or “Means Income Source Identified — UIF,” it means one of three things:

1. You are currently receiving UIF benefits You are registered as an active UIF beneficiary and are receiving payments. You are not eligible for the SRD grant while this is the case. Once your UIF benefits end, you can reapply for the SRD grant.

2. You are registered with UIF but not receiving benefits You may be registered as a UIF contributor through employment but are not currently receiving any UIF payments — for example, you are currently unemployed and your UIF claim has not been approved or has ended. In this case, SASSA’s system may have incorrectly flagged you. You can appeal this decision.

3. SASSA’s system has made an error SASSA’s verification system cross-checks your ID number against UIF records. In some cases it incorrectly flags people as UIF recipients when they are not receiving any payments. This can be resolved through the appeal process.

How to Check Your UIF Status

Before appealing, verify whether you are actually registered as a UIF beneficiary:

  1. Go to https://ufiling.labour.gov.za/uif
  2. Log in with your ID number
  3. Check your current UIF status

If your status shows as inactive — meaning you are not receiving UIF benefits — you have grounds to appeal SASSA’s decline decision.

How to Appeal a “UIF Registered” SASSA Decline

If you are not receiving UIF benefits but SASSA has declined your application on this basis, follow these steps:

Step 1 — Gather your supporting documents

You will need to prove that you are not receiving UIF benefits. Collect as many of the following as possible:

  • Bank statements for the past 3–6 months — showing no UIF deposits into your account
  • A letter from the UIF confirming you are not receiving benefits — request this at your nearest Department of Employment and Labour office or through ufiling.labour.gov.za
  • Employment termination letter — if you recently lost your job and have not yet received UIF
  • Any other supporting documents that demonstrate you have no current income

Step 2 — Submit your appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Log in with your ID number and registered cellphone number
  3. Navigate to the Appeal section
  4. Enter your details and select the month(s) your application was declined
  5. Upload your supporting documents — bank statements and UIF confirmation letter
  6. Submit your appeal and note your reference number

Step 3 — Wait for the outcome

SASSA will review your appeal and notify you of the decision. This process typically takes 60 to 90 days. Check your status regularly at srd.sassa.gov.za and watch for SMS notifications requesting additional documents.

What Happens If Your UIF Benefits End?

If you were previously receiving UIF benefits and they have now ended, you may be eligible for the SRD R370 grant going forward. You will need to reapply — your previous declined application cannot simply be reactivated.

To reapply:

  1. Confirm your UIF benefits have officially ended at ufiling.labour.gov.za
  2. Wait until the following month after benefits end
  3. Submit a new SRD R370 application at srd.sassa.gov.za
  4. SASSA will reassess your eligibility based on your current circumstances

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you claim UIF and SASSA at the same time? No. You cannot receive UIF benefits and the SASSA SRD R370 grant simultaneously. If SASSA detects active UIF benefits linked to your ID number, your application will be automatically declined.

What does “UIF registered” mean on my SASSA application? It means SASSA’s system has detected a UIF registration linked to your ID number. This could mean you are actively receiving UIF benefits, or it could be an error if you are registered but not currently receiving any payments. Check your status at ufiling.labour.gov.za to confirm.

Can I appeal if SASSA declined my application because of UIF? Yes. If you are not actually receiving UIF benefits, you can appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za. Submit bank statements and a UIF confirmation letter proving no UIF payments are being received.

How long does the SASSA UIF appeal take? Between 60 and 90 days. Check your status regularly at srd.sassa.gov.za and respond promptly to any SMS notifications from SASSA requesting additional documents.

What if I was receiving UIF but it has ended — can I apply for SASSA? Yes. Once your UIF benefits have officially ended, you can apply for the SRD R370 grant at srd.sassa.gov.za. Reapply in the month after your UIF benefits end.

Will I receive backdated payments if my UIF appeal is approved? If your appeal is approved, payments are typically backdated to the month your application was originally declined. This means you will receive the missed payments in a lump sum.

Who can I contact if my appeal is taking longer than 90 days? Call the SASSA toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11 (Monday to Friday, office hours) or message 082 046 8553 on WhatsApp.

Does being employed and paying UIF contributions affect my SASSA eligibility? Yes. If you are currently employed and earning an income — even if you are paying UIF contributions and not receiving benefits — you are not eligible for the SRD grant, as the grant is for people with no income.
