Who Qualifies for the SASSA Grant-in-Aid and How to Claim Your R560 Monthly Top-Up

If you already receive a SASSA Disability Grant, Old Age Grant, or War Veterans Grant and you cannot care for yourself without full-time help from another person, you may qualify for an additional monthly payment called the Grant-in-Aid.

As of April 2025, the Grant-in-Aid pays R560 per month on top of your existing grant.

What Is the SASSA Grant-in-Aid?

The Grant-in-Aid is a supplementary payment added to your existing SASSA grant. It is not a standalone grant — it is paid alongside your Disability, Old Age, or War Veterans grant to help cover the cost of the full-time care you need.

The payment goes directly to you as the grant recipient. You can use it however you choose, including to compensate a family member or helper providing your care.

Who Qualifies for the Grant-in-Aid?

To qualify, you must meet all of the following:

  • You are currently receiving a SASSA Disability Grant, Old Age Grant, or War Veterans Grant
  • You cannot care for yourself due to a physical or mental disability and require full-time attendance from another person
  • You are not being cared for in a state-funded institution or facility that receives a government subsidy for your care or housing

If you are cared for in a private home — whether by a family member, friend, or paid helper — you may qualify.

How Much Is the Grant-in-Aid in 2025?

R560 per month, effective from April 2025.

This is paid on top of your existing grant. For example:

  • Disability Grant (R2,315) + Grant-in-Aid (R560) = R2,875 per month total
  • Old Age Grant (R2,315) + Grant-in-Aid (R560) = R2,875 per month total

How to Apply for the Grant-in-Aid

Applications must be made in person at your nearest SASSA office. Forms are not available online.

What to bring:

  • Your 13-digit South African ID document (barcoded ID or smart card)
  • A medical report or functional assessment confirming you need full-time care — this must be less than 3 months old
  • Proof of marital status if applicable (marriage certificate, divorce papers, or sworn affidavit)
  • Your spouse’s ID if married

Important: If you are too ill or elderly to travel to the SASSA office yourself, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf. They must bring a letter from you explaining why you cannot attend, and/or a doctor’s note confirming your condition.

At the SASSA office:

  1. Request a Grant-in-Aid application form from the SASSA officer
  2. Complete the form in the presence of a SASSA officer — only you or a SASSA official may complete it
  3. The officer will interview you and confirm whether you qualify
  4. You will receive a receipt — keep this as proof of your application

How Long Does the Application Take?

  • Processing takes up to 3 months from the date of application
  • If approved, payments are backdated to your application date — you will not lose payments during the waiting period
  • The service is completely free — do not pay anyone to apply on your behalf

How Will You Receive Payment?

The Grant-in-Aid is paid alongside your existing SASSA grant through the same payment method you already use:

  • Direct bank or Postbank deposit — funds are deposited directly into your registered account on your scheduled payment date
  • SASSA card — withdraw at ATMs or retail partners including Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, and Checkers
  • Approved pay point — collected on your scheduled payment day at your designated pay point

If you cannot collect your grant in person, you can appoint a representative (procurator) at your SASSA office, or authorise someone with power of attorney to collect on your behalf.

When Will Your Grant-in-Aid Be Reviewed?

Your Grant-in-Aid will be reviewed at the same time as your primary grant — Disability, Old Age, or War Veterans Grant. SASSA will notify you in advance of any review date. Be prepared to provide an updated medical assessment if requested.

If you receive an SMS from SASSA requesting a review, respond promptly. Ignoring a review notification can result in your grant being suspended.

What If Your Application Is Declined?

If SASSA declines your application, they will provide a written explanation of the reason.

If you disagree with the decision, you can appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of receiving your rejection notice. Visit your nearest SASSA office for assistance with the appeal process. The appeal is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the SASSA Grant-in-Aid in 2025? R560 per month, paid in addition to your existing Disability, Old Age, or War Veterans Grant. This amount has been in effect since April 2025.

What is the difference between the Grant-in-Aid and the Assisted Living Grant? They are the same grant. “Assisted Living Grant” is an informal name sometimes used for the Grant-in-Aid. The official SASSA name is the Grant-in-Aid.

Can I get the Grant-in-Aid if I live at home with family? Yes. As long as you require full-time care and are not living in a state-funded institution, you may qualify regardless of whether your carer is a family member or paid helper.

Can I apply for the Grant-in-Aid online? No. Applications must be submitted in person at your nearest SASSA office. Find your closest office at www.sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11.

Do I need to reapply for the Grant-in-Aid every year? Not automatically — the grant continues alongside your primary grant until it is reviewed. SASSA will inform you if a review is required.

What medical report do I need? A medical or functional assessment report no older than 3 months, confirming that your physical or mental condition requires full-time care from another person. Your doctor or a SASSA-appointed medical officer can provide this.

Can someone else collect my Grant-in-Aid payment for me? Yes. You can appoint a representative (procurator) at your SASSA office, or give someone power of attorney to collect payments on your behalf.

Is the Grant-in-Aid paid separately from my main grant? No — it is paid on the same date and through the same method as your existing Disability, Old Age, or War Veterans grant. It will simply reflect as a higher total amount on your payment date.

Is there a fee to apply for the Grant-in-Aid? No. All SASSA services are completely free. Do not pay anyone to apply on your behalf.

What is the SASSA Grant-in-Aid payment date? It follows the same schedule as your primary grant. Old Age and War Veterans grants are paid on the 3rd and 4th of the month respectively. Disability grants are paid on the 4th. See our full SASSA payment dates page for the current month’s confirmed schedule.
