2026 SASSA Grant Increases — Confirmed in the 2026 Budget Speech

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed the following grant increases in his Budget Speech delivered in Parliament on 25 February 2026. All increases take effect from 1 April 2026, the start of the new 2026/2027 financial year.

The increases average approximately 3.4%, slightly below last year’s increases but in line with the current lower inflation outlook. The government allocated R292.8 billion to social grants in the 2026/2027 financial year, up from R284.7 billion in 2025/2026.

Key points from the 2026 Budget on social grants:

The Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, and Care Dependency Grant each increase by R85 to R2,400 per month. The War Veterans Grant increases by R85 to R2,420. The Foster Child Grant increases in two phases: R1,295 from April 2026 and R1,300 from October 2026. The Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid both increase by R20 to R580 per month. The SRD R370 grant does not increase — it remains at R370 per month and has been extended to 31 March 2027.

These increases are lower than the R120 increase most grants received in April 2025, reflecting the government’s lower inflation projections for 2026/2027 and tighter fiscal constraints.

SRD R370 Grant — Extension and Current Status

The SRD grant will remain at R370 per month throughout 2026/2027 despite calls from civil society and labour organisations for an increase. The 2026 Budget allocated R36.4 billion to extend the grant until 31 March 2027.

Finance Minister Godongwana confirmed that details of the planned redesign of the SRD into a livelihood grant will be announced at the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) later in 2026. President Ramaphosa announced at the 2026 State of the Nation Address that the grant will be “redesigned to more effectively support livelihoods, skills development, work opportunities and productive activity.”

Key facts about the SRD R370 grant:

  • Amount: R370 per month, unchanged
  • Extended until: 31 March 2027
  • Currently supports approximately 9 million beneficiaries monthly
  • Apply or check your status at: srd.sassa.gov.za

SASSA Fraud Crackdown and Biometric Verification 2026

Alongside the grant increases, the 2026 Budget confirmed that SASSA is significantly tightening fraud prevention. The agency’s allocation for 2025/2026 was made conditional on improving biometric and income verification processes.

By December 2025, SASSA had reviewed approximately 292,000 grants, cancelling 34,661 that no longer met eligibility criteria. A further 8,600 grants for disabled and older people were reduced in value. These measures generated savings of approximately R170.7 million.

From 2026, all new grant applicants are required to complete biometric verification using fingerprints or other biometric data. The Treasury projects that enhanced fraud targeting will yield R3 billion in savings in 2026/2027.

What this means for current beneficiaries:

If you receive an SMS from SASSA requesting a grant review, you must respond promptly. Ignoring a review notification can result in your grant being suspended. Bring your original ID document and any supporting documents to the review appointment at your nearest SASSA office.

If you have not yet completed biometric verification as a new applicant, visit your nearest SASSA office with your original ID document to complete the process.

How to Keep Your SASSA Details Updated

Your payments can be delayed or suspended if your details on the SASSA system are outdated. Keep the following up to date:

Banking details: Update at srd.sassa.gov.za (for SRD grant) or at your nearest SASSA office (for all other grants).

Cellphone number: Must be updated in person at a SASSA office. Cannot be changed online without access to your registered number.

Address and income: Update at your nearest SASSA office or via the SASSA website if your circumstances change.

SASSA Grant Payment Dates 2026

SASSA pays grants during the first week of each month in the following order:

  • Old Age Grant: 3rd of the month
  • Disability Grant: 4th of the month
  • Children’s grants (Child Support, Care Dependency, Foster Child, Grant-in-Aid): 5th of the month
  • SRD R370 Grant: Between the 24th and last day of the month

If a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, SASSA pays on the last working day before that date. Funds remain available in your account after the payment date — you do not need to withdraw on the exact day.

The new April 2026 grant amounts will be reflected in your first payment of the new financial year. No action is needed on your part.
