Is That SASSA Message or Website Legit? Here’s How to Know for Sure
SASSA Will Never Do These Things
If a message, call, or website asks you to do any of the following, it is a scam:
Provide your PIN, password, or banking details via SMS or WhatsApp. Share your ID number in response to an unsolicited message. Pay any fee to receive or unblock your grant. Click a link to “verify” or “reactivate” your account.
SASSA does not contact beneficiaries this way. Legitimate status updates come through srd.sassa.gov.za or the official app — not random WhatsApp numbers or emails.
Red Flags in Messages
Urgent or threatening language (“your grant will be cancelled today”). Generic greeting (“Dear Beneficiary”) with no name. A link that is not sassa.gov.za or srd.sassa.gov.za. Requests for OTPs, PINs, or bank account numbers.
Red Flags on Websites
URL does not end in .gov.za. No padlock (https) in the browser bar. Page asks for your banking details or card number.
What To Do
Do not click any links or reply. Forward the message to report.fraud@sassa.gov.za. Call the fraud hotline: 0800 60 10 11 (free). Check your bank account for any unauthorised transactions.
