How to Update Your SASSA SRD Payment Details in 2026 — Step by Step

What To Do First?

Go to the official SRD portal and log in using your ID number and the phone number registered to your SRD application. Navigate to the banking details section and check what is currently on record before making any changes. If your details are already correct and verified, payment processing should proceed normally. If your details are incorrect, missing, or showing as unverified, update them immediately using the steps below.

Why Your SRD Banking Details Matter

SASSA cannot process your SRD payment without verified banking details. Even if your status shows Approved for a month, payment will not be released until SASSA has verified that your banking details are correct and the account is in your name. An approved status with no payment date almost always means banking details need attention.

Your banking details on the SRD portal must match your ID document exactly. The account must be in your name, active, and able to receive deposits. If any of these conditions are not met, payment will be blocked regardless of your approval status.

Which Banks and Payment Methods SASSA Accepts for SRD

SASSA accepts several payment methods for SRD. Understanding which options are available helps you choose the most reliable one for your situation.

Bank account deposit. The most reliable and recommended payment method. SASSA supports all major South African banks including Absa, Standard Bank, FNB, Nedbank, Capitec, African Bank, TymeBank, and Bank Zero. Digital and challenger banks are accepted provided the account is in your name and active.

TymeBank. Widely used for SRD because TymeBank accounts are free to open and can be opened at Pick n Pay and Boxer stores using your ID document. Many SRD recipients use TymeBank specifically because it is easy to access and has no monthly fees. For a dedicated guide on using TymeBank for SRD see our TymeBank SASSA payments guide.

Capitec. Widely accepted and commonly used. Capitec’s savings and transaction accounts both work for SRD deposits.

Post Office. SASSA previously paid many SRD recipients through the Post Office. Due to the Post Office’s ongoing financial difficulties and service disruptions, this payment method is unreliable. If you are still registered for Post Office payment, update to a bank account immediately.

CashSend. A cash payment method where SASSA sends a voucher code to your registered phone number. You use the code to collect cash at certain ATMs or retailers. CashSend vouchers expire if not collected. This method is less reliable than a bank account deposit.

Retail collection. Cash collection at Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave. If your SRD is set up for retail collection you will receive an SMS with your collection reference and which retailer to use.

How To Update Your SRD Banking Details Step by Step

Go to the official SRD portal.

Enter your South African ID number and the phone number registered to your SRD application. Request the OTP sent to your registered phone number and enter it to verify your identity.

Once logged in, navigate to the banking details or payment details section of your profile.

Review what is currently on record. Note the account number, bank name, and account type shown.

If the details are incorrect or you want to change them, select the update or change option. Enter your new bank account number, select your bank from the dropdown, and select your account type. Double check every digit of your account number before submitting. A single incorrect digit will cause verification to fail.

Submit the update. You will receive an SMS confirming your banking details have been updated.

Allow one to two payment cycles for SASSA to verify your new details before expecting payment to reflect in the new account.

Common Banking Details Update Problems and How To Fix Them

OTP not received. The OTP is sent to the phone number currently registered on your SRD profile, not necessarily your current phone number. If you no longer have access to your registered number, you cannot complete the banking details update until you first update your phone number. See our SRD Phone Number Change guide for how to resolve this first.

Account verification failed. This means the account details you submitted did not pass SASSA’s verification check. The most common causes are the account is not in your name, the account name does not exactly match your ID document name, the account number was entered incorrectly, the account is closed or dormant, or the account type does not accept this type of deposit. Correct the issue and resubmit.

Portal not accepting the update. If the portal is not saving your new details, try clearing your browser cache and reloading the page. Use a different browser if the problem persists. If you cannot complete the update online, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and request assistance with your banking details update over the phone or visit your nearest SASSA office.

Details updated but payment still going to old account. If you updated your details after a payment was already processed for a specific month, that month’s payment will have gone to the old account. Check your old account for the funds. Future months will use your new details once verification is complete.

Account rejected by SASSA. Some account types are not accepted for SRD payments. Accounts that belong to another person, accounts that require multiple signatories, and some business accounts will be rejected. Use a personal account in your own name only.

Banking details showing as unverified. After submitting an update, details go through a verification process before SASSA will process payment to the new account. Unverified details mean the process is still in progress. Allow up to one payment cycle for verification to complete. If details remain unverified after two payment cycles, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

Which Account Details You Need Before Updating

Before starting the update process, have the following ready:

Your account number. This is the number printed on your bank card or shown in your banking app. Double check every digit.

Your bank name. Select from the dropdown on the SRD portal. If your bank is not listed, contact SASSA to confirm whether your bank is currently supported.

Your account type. Most personal accounts are either a current or cheque account, or a savings account. If unsure, check your bank card or app for the account type description.

Your branch code. Some updates may require your branch code. For most major banks the universal branch code is: Absa 632005, Standard Bank 051001, FNB 250655, Nedbank 198765, Capitec 470010, TymeBank 678910, African Bank 430000.

How To Update Banking Details at a SASSA Office

If you cannot complete the update online, you can update your banking details in person at your nearest SASSA office.

Take your original South African ID document, your bank card or a recent bank statement showing your account number and your name, and your phone number linked to your SRD application.

Ask the official at the SASSA office to assist you with a banking details update for your SRD application. They will verify your identity and update the details on the system on your behalf.

After the in-person update, allow one to two payment cycles for the change to be processed and verified.

Scam Awareness for Banking Details Updates

Banking details updates are one of the most heavily targeted areas for SRD scammers. Knowing what scams look like protects your money.

Fake banking update websites. Scammers create websites that look like official SASSA portals and ask you to enter your banking details. They then use your details to redirect your SRD payment to their own accounts. Always check that the URL begins with srd.sassa.gov.za before entering any information.

WhatsApp and SMS banking update scams. You may receive a message claiming to be from SASSA asking you to update your banking details via a link. SASSA does not send unsolicited links for banking updates. Ignore these messages and go directly to the official portal.

Agent fee scams. People claiming to be SASSA agents who can update your banking details for a fee. SASSA never charges fees for banking detail updates. Any person asking for payment to update your details is a scammer.

OTP theft. Scammers may call claiming to be SASSA and ask for the OTP you just received. They then use your OTP to log into your profile and change your banking details to their own account. Never share your OTP with anyone.

Banking details updates are completely free and must only be done at srd.sassa.gov.za.

SRD Banking Details FAQs

Can I use someone else’s bank account for my SRD payment? No. SASSA requires the account to be in your name and to match your ID document. Accounts in another person’s name will fail verification.

Can I use a TymeBank account for SRD? Yes. TymeBank is widely used for SRD payments and is fully accepted. You can open a TymeBank account at Pick n Pay or Boxer using your ID document at no cost.

Can I use a Capitec account? Yes. Capitec savings and transaction accounts are accepted for SRD payments.

How long does banking details verification take? Verification typically takes one payment cycle. If your details remain unverified after two payment cycles, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

My bank is not in the SASSA dropdown. What do I do? Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to confirm whether your bank is currently supported. If not, consider opening a free TymeBank or Capitec account which are both widely supported.

I updated my details but my payment date has not appeared. Why? After updating, allow one to two payment cycles for verification to complete before a payment date appears. If no payment date appears after two cycles, contact SASSA.

Can I change back to Post Office payment? The Post Office payment method has been significantly disrupted. SASSA strongly advises against returning to Post Office collection. Update to a bank account for reliable payment.

What is CashSend and should I use it? CashSend is a method where SASSA sends a voucher code to your phone and you collect cash at certain ATMs or retailers. It is less reliable than a bank account deposit because vouchers expire. A bank account is the recommended payment method.

I am being asked to pay a fee to update my banking details. Is this legitimate? No. Banking details updates are completely free. Anyone asking for payment is a scammer. Use only the official SRD portal.
